Floraison
2021
Acacia mearnsii (Black Wattle) & Mild Steel
220cm x 31cm x 29cm
Floraison consists of two sections of the same trunk, of equal length.
Following a simple subtractive process, carefully removing material in the space between knots, between branches, slowly was revealed the delicate helicoidal (spiral) structure of the tree.
Reminiscent of the inflorescence in many annual plants, Floraison can be interpreted a rising of life force, the precise moment between growth and fertility, between life and decay.
The colours are natural, the cracking mostly pre-existent, and the suggestive forms entirely fortuitous.
The tree was found fallen, 5 sculptures were created from this one individual being.
By far one the highlights of my collection, the interplay between the two is endlessly satisfying, the negative space they offer can be renewed by a simple rotation of one, or both sculptures.
