Artist statement - Lucas Guilbert
As an emerging artist, my passion lies in creating artwork that evokes profound contemplation and resonance with its audience. Drawing inspiration from the organic shapes found in nature, I utilize natural materials like wood to form my sculptures, imparting a sense of earthiness to my work. However, it is my use of abstract wood carvings that gives my sculptures their unique character - a blend of the primitive and the modern. My fascination with wood as a medium has driven me to explore all ecological regions of the continent in search of exceptional pieces of timber.
To create my desired effect on the wood, I employ a range of techniques, such as burning, charring, brushing, distressing, oiling, buffing, bleaching, dyeing, and quenching. These methods add depth, texture, and contrast, accentuating the singular features of each piece of timber. The organic forms of my sculptures are enhanced by the natural beauty of the wood, resulting in pieces that are genuinely singular.
My sculptures are marked by earthy hues that harmonize with the natural wood grain, while bursts of vibrant colors add a touch of contemporary flair. Every work of art I create is exceptional, and I strive to make them both visually stimulating and thought-provoking. My sculptures have been exhibited in sculpture galleries, outdoor installations, and public art commissions, as well as in interior design art shows, where I have been commissioned to create site-specific sculptures for private art collections.
My sustainable and contemporary approach to sculpture has earned recognition from art critics, art consultants, and art dealers alike. I firmly believe that art is a valuable investment, and I collaborate closely with art appraisers and valuers to ensure that every piece of my artwork is accurately assessed and acquired by collectors who appreciate fine, collectible art that is also unique.
My passion for sculpture is deeply rooted in my love for nature, and I strive to create sculptures that inspire others to appreciate the beauty that surrounds us. I believe that art has the power to connect people to nature and to each other, and my sculptures are a tribute to that conviction.
