Lucas Guilbert’s Sculpture Gallery and Studio Brings Artistic Flair to Docklands

Lucas Guilbert, a talented woodcarver, has opened a new sculpture gallery and studio in the Docklands area of Melbourne. The space, which was provided through a program with MAB, CoM, and Renew Australia, offers visitors an opportunity to witness the creative process of art-making while also enjoying the beauty of finished works by Lucas and other local artists.

Despite being in operation for just six months, the reception from locals and visitors to the gallery has been overwhelmingly positive. From friendly conversations with residents and dog-walkers to the discovery of new talent in the artistic community, the space has already become a hub of activity and creativity.

Lucas's art is a reflection of the contrasting elements of the natural and human worlds, and the Docklands area provides a perfect backdrop for this unique vision. He hopes to continue to expand the space and eventually offer an outdoor workshop for larger works while keeping the studio as a more polished and fine art-directed space for exhibiting art.

In the future, Lucas dreams of creating a live sculpture studio in a prominent location on the docks. The studio would feature a shipping container with a perspex roll-up screen, where he can carve ancient timber from the piers to be used as public artworks in the next stage of Docklands development. The sculptures would depict the timeline of the place they stand on, from prehistoric lava plains to industrial and residential development. The sculptures would be polished and charred, smooth and textured, like the history they represent.

As Lucas settles into the space, he is excited to bring in more sculptures, add lighting, and improve the layout to make the space even more beautiful. The gallery offers an opportunity for local artists to showcase their work and engage with the community, and Lucas hopes to continue to expand and evolve the space to create a sustainable and thriving artistic hub in the heart of the Docklands.
