LUCAS GUILBERT
Born and raised in Montreal, Lucas Guilbert grew up bathed by an infusion of cultures. His mother, of French Canadian descent, and his father, French-Mexican, Lucas considers his diverse upbringing to be the inception of his artistic practice. After many years of travel, Lucas migrated to Australia in 2007. Moved by his new environment and outlook, his attention focused on the landscape and unique natural paradigm of his new home.
Exploring sustainable materials from the many different ecological regions of the continent, Lucas carefully sources unique timber for his sculptural practice. By centering his artistic practice around wood, he is able to explore creatively, while being connected to, and informed by, the biological roots anchored in the material.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Larger than life, Guilbert’s sculptural forms offer an awakening of an ancestral and mythical response in an urbanized context. Guilbert’s practice suggests a place of connection - between material and spiritual, wild and tame, and masculine and feminine. He seeks to challenge our relationship to the wild by reinstating the unapologetic elements of natural beauty in a hypermodern, often sterile and regimented world. The sculptures announce a feeling of tension and harmony through the selection of treatments applied to the wood, often leaving the natural grain exposed. Guilbert’s work is both striking and organic, resonating with the viewer on a fundamental level.
